A passion for animal care and conservation
Veterinary expertise: As a qualified veterinary nurse, I’ve had the privilege of working in clinical settings, providing surgical and medical nursing to domestic pets and wildlife. My experience extends to Adelaide Zoo, where I served as a zookeeper, caring for various species in the nocturnal house and engaging with the intelligent and playful primates.
Firefighting and wildlife protection: Witnessing the impact of fires on wildlife propelled me into volunteer firefighting. As a member of the CFS and the Tea Tree Gully CFS Cadet Coordinator, I focus on preventing animal deaths and habitat destruction while educating young minds on fire recovery and resilience through innovative programs.
A lifelong commitment to music and education
Music education: My journey in music education began with a teaching qualification from the Royal Schools of Music. Over the years, I’ve taught piano, directed musical stage productions, and contributed as a church organist. My commitment to fostering a love for music in children led me to become an accredited Kindermusik educator specialising in early childhood music and movement classes.
Environmental literacy through the arts: Leveraging my background in music and environmental science, I’ve developed classes for primary and kindergarten children to enhance environmental literacy. These sessions combine music, drama, and art to teach children about the planet, emphasising the importance of conservation, biodiversity, and sustainability.
Roots in conservation
Zimbabwean heritage: Growing up in Zimbabwe, as my father and brother were deeply involved in wildlife conservation, I was immersed in the challenges of wildlife trafficking and poaching. This upbringing instilled a profound respect for nature and a desire to contribute to environmental education and anti-poaching efforts.
Innovative solutions for a sustainable future
Building on experience: Drawing on my diverse experiences, I am currently developing a software application aimed at supporting emergency first responders in minimising trauma associated with animal-related incidents. This initiative reflects my holistic approach to animal care, conservation, and the well-being of our community.
A story from our pangolin mascot
Dear Children,
You may well ask if I am a scary alien with my full armour and long claws because very few people know who I am or have ever seen an animal like me.
My name is Morley, and I am a gentle pangolin who wears a beautiful coat of scales to protect me when I roll up into a ball. Rolling into a ball means that the lions get very confused when they are trying to catch me and I hope they think I am just a soccer ball and not something to eat! I don’t need a toothbrush because I have no teeth to clean but I do have the longest tongue you have ever seen which helps me to catch delicious ,scurrying ants for dinner. My tongue can be as long as my body, imagine that!!
I have a question for you,did you know humans eat us, use our scales for jewelry and medicine? This is quite astonishing considering our scales are composed of keratin, the same stuff your fingernails and hair are made from , only a different colour.
What does this mean to me as a pangolin? It means that Pangolins are the most trafficked or poached mammal on the planet.
Everything we use as humans is collected, picked, cut, dug ,taken or starts from the earth in some shape or form and we need to know whether our actions take care of our planet or if our actions are destroying and breaking our earth.
I invite you to become a Planet Earthkid and come with me as we learn how to take care of our planet and will you tell your friends about me so that my 4 families in Africa and 4 families in Asia can be safe?
You are the guardians of your planet ,your voice and actions will help to keep our earth, environment and creatures safer.
With love,
Morley
